A bad argument

This is a bit of a follow-up to my last blog. A colleague has a commentary running about Dr. Henry Morgantaler and how he doesn't blame anyone who would return their Order of Canada honour in protest of the abortionist receiving one. My colleague's argument against abortion is that we wouldn't have Wayne Gretzky if his mother had an abortion or Shania Twain if her mother had had one. Bad argument. All those who would have been in favour of Adolph Hitler's mother having an abortion, raise your hands. Paul Bernardo's mother? Robert Pickton's mother? Saddam Hussein's mother? Osama Bin Laden's mother? Ted Bundy's mother? Jeffrey Dahmer's mother? Need I go on? Bad argument.

In this country you have the right to be anti-abortion or pro-choice - but let's make arguments that are thoughtful and make sense. Let's stop the propaganda. Let's be honest about whether we're arguing fact or faith. And let's respect each other's right to an opinion even, no, especially, if we don't agree.

Great post!

Dr. Morgentaler is one of my heroes and I was raised a strict Roman Catholic. I see things from both sides, I think. :)

Yes bad arguement. However when abortion is used as a convenience and not necessity then there is an issue. I am against abortion for any reason. That's me I have my reasons.
When doctors and scientists work to prolonglife to an extent of losing quality of life with no regard for costs, are we losing touch with the reality of life?
We have reduced abortion to a choice. Not life, but a choice one person can make to decide if life begins and according to statistics millions upon millions have had abortions and not out of necessity but due to convenience.
If the woman is suppose to have so much right with her body then she should be able to abuse it with alcohol, drugs and suicide without intervention. That is her right, is it not? It's her body and she has the choice to keep it healthy or destroy it but that is not what society dictates at this time.
Life is a perpetual cycle, never ending, until we decide to stop it.
No one (in their right mind) would destroy a child of theirs that they have had for years. There is a face to look at and a person to touch. Aborting a fetus is the choice a woman makes because it is easy, not seeing the face. I say easy because in the majority of cases, if precautions, which are widely available, had been taken, Dr. Morgentaler would be a sidenote.
Giving back the Order of Canada is a personal choice. Just like other decisions we might make.
